Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Population Studies
Departmental Affiliation(s): PSTC
Background Info:
Megan Klein Hattori received her PhD in Sociology from the University of Maryland in 2008 and has been a postdoctoral research associate here at the PSTC since this past January. She is interested in how individuals understand themselves, their partners, their relationships, and, ultimately, how these understandings motivate union formation and reproductive health behavior. Her dissertation research focused on how young adults in Tanzania form trusting and committed relationships and how once developed, trust and commitment influence condom use and fidelity.
Current Research:
Her current work focuses on how the way youth see themselves through the eyes of their partners influence feelings of self-esteem and depression. She is a collaborator in the Partnership in Improving Reproductive Health between Brown University and Jimma University in Ethiopia. She is working with data from the Gilgel Gibe Social and Sexual Relationship History Survey to explore the patterns in response biases to sensitive questions using the non-verbal response cards and has begun qualitative research among newlyweds in Jimma to explore changes in the marriage process.
