Background
Calvin Goldscheider, who received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Brown in 1964, became Professor of Sociology and Judaic Studies in 1985. Previously Professor of Demography and Sociology at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Goldscheider has continued his research into the effects of ethnicity on demographic behavior focusing on ethnic groups in Israel, the United States and in Sweden. One focus of his research has involved comparative, historical research on the demographic and social/structural changes among Jews as compared to others in Europe, North America, and Israel over the last 150 years.
During the last several years, Goldscheider has additionally focused on the role of ethnic, racial, and religious group differences in a wide range of demographic, family, and stratification patterns. He has studied immigrants in Venezuela and Argentina, and is currently investigating gender and inter-generational relationships and demographic characteristics of recent immigrants to Sweden in the context of political and economic integration. He spent the 1997-1998 academic year in Sweden carrying out his latest research project.
Goldscheider served as Chair of the Duncan Prize Committee of the Population Section of the American Sociological Association (1995-1996). Goldscheider served as Chair of the Sociology Department from 1993 to 1997.
