Training
Training Activities in Ethiopia
Brown project members conducted a program of six, three-day workshops at the Demographic Training and Research Center (DTRC), Addis Ababa University. The workshops were attended by faculty from Jimma, Addis Ababa, and Gondar Universities. The workshops covered methods for describing and modeling fertility behavior and trends in Ethiopia, and for designing, monitoring and evaluating reproductive health and family planning programs. Course packets with lecture notes and reprints of related methodological and research articles were distributed to participants in the workshops. All workshops were organized to provide both classroom lectures and computer lab experience. The workshops produced six policy reports on current fertility patterns and recent fertility change in Ethiopia and in the Amhara and Oromia regions that were published in the Partnership in Improving Reproductive Health, Background Reports series. In addition, a number of articles were published in the Ethiopian Journal of Health Development.
Training Workshops Conducted in Ethiopia
Here are some examples of recent workshops:

We also have provided funds to Addis Ababa University (Graduate Program in Demography) and Jimma University (Undergraduate Program in Public Health) to support student research on reproductive health. These fellowship funds were awarded through an open competition for research grants and solicited proposals from undergraduate and graduate students. Students received financial support to conduct field research projects, and they had access to computer and library resources in the Reproductive Health Data Center. Awards were made to six students at Addis Ababa University and five students at Jimma University. Several of the student theses were published in the Ethiopian Journal of Health Development.
To integrate student training at Jimma University into the Jimma Longitudinal Family Survey of Youth, we have initiated the Packard Reproductive Health Fellows Program for students in the Masters of Public Health Program. Fellows may conduct original, small-scale research, such as focus groups in the JLFSY study area, conduct analyses of the JLFSY data, or propose to include a module of questions in a round of the survey. Fellows receive funds for research expenses and a book allowance, and are provided with a work area and use of a desktop computer in the Reproductive Health Data Center. Three fellows are selected each year for a duration of one year, with a possibility of renewal for one additional year.
Training at Brown University
Four students from Ethiopia have completed the Ph.D. program in Sociology with a specialization in Demography at Brown University. In addition, two postdoctoral fellows at Brown University have also been closely involved in the Ethiopia project as part of their research training in population research.
