Gilgel Gibe Survey
In 2006, we launched an innovative survey of adolescent and young adult sexual attitudes, social relationship, and behavior. The Gilgel Gibe Social and Sexual Relationship History Survey collects information on the formation of romantic relationships and the transition into sexual activity for adolescents and young adults age 13-24. The sample for this survey was drawn from the Asendabo Demographic Surveillance System (DSS), which incorporates rural communities and small urban centers in the immediate areas surrounding the Gilgel Gibe dam, Jimma Zone. The Asendabo DSS was established in 2005 by Jimma University to monitor the changing health and demographic status of the study population, and to evaluate the impact of health program interventions and economic and social development projects. Key sections of the Gilgel Gibe Social and Sexual Relationship History Survey will constitute the core of the second round of the JLFSY adolescent survey, and of a four city cross-sectional survey of youth that we will conduct in 2007.
